Jot: Waiting as active space

Context

You wait. You text. You talk. You make notes.

Jot explores how lounge and waiting environments have changed. These spaces are no longer passive; they are where people check messages, open laptops, make notes, and hold short conversations.

The project began with a question: how might seating support these everyday behaviors without feeling restrictive or improvised?

Insight

Waiting spaces work best when they acknowledge use rather than assume stillness.

When furniture anticipates movement, interaction becomes easier and less deliberate.

Process

Jot was developed as a system of lounge seating with an integrated tablet surface. Early studies focused on entry, posture, and orientation - how users move into and out of a seat while managing personal items.

Rather than adding a tablet as an attachment, the surface was integrated into the structure itself. The wood element flows from the side and base of the chair, creating a continuous relationship between seat and surface. The upholstered cushion wraps perpendicular to the tablet, while the asymmetrical frame subtly guides the user toward the open side.

Left and right configurations allow individual chairs to combine into multiple arrangements, supporting different spatial and social needs.

Resolution

Jot re-frames lounge seating as an active environment. By integrating a full-time work surface and prioritizing open entry, the system supports brief, everyday tasks without compromising comfort or clarity of form.
