Lily Pad: Surface and depth

Context

Lily Pad explores how technology occupies space on desks and tables - often visually cluttered, partially hidden, and rarely intentional. The project began with an interest in what happens above and below the surface, and how those two conditions might be designed together.

As wireless charging emerged, the question became how a device could remain accessible and present, while cables and infrastructure recede quietly from view.

Process

The familiar desk grommet was re-imagined as both organizer and platform. Below the surface, a slotted liner sorts cables, preventing plugs from slipping out of reach. Above the surface, an elevated cap provides a resting place for devices.

Insight

Not everything needs to be visible to be accessible. When infrastructure is thoughtfully hidden, the surface becomes calmer and more purposeful.

Status

Self-initiated concept. Manufactured by Doug Mockett.
