Topper: Invitation through form

Context

Topper explores how seating can feel inviting without appearing heavy. The project began with an interest in visual lightness - how a lounge chair might suggest comfort and ease while remaining compact and clearly defined in space.

The chair is composed as two primary elements: a grounded seat and a backrest that appears to float upward through it. The relationship creates a sense of lift and approachability, encouraging use without instruction.

Process

Early studies focused on proportion and posture. The seat was shaped to feel generous and stable, while the backrest was refined as a distinct volume—visually separated yet structurally integrated.

By allowing the backrest to emerge through the seat rather than sit behind it, the form gains clarity and lightness. Physical and digital models were used to test how subtle changes in curvature affected comfort, entry, and perceived softness.

Resolution

Topper is a lounge chair that invites relaxation through its posture. A soft, grounded base paired with a buoyant backrest creates a chair that feels both playful and composed - visually light, yet physically supportive.
